The Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience fuses a big band spirit with an inventive edge that is more risky than Buble and more modern than Sinatra. Johnson, an Emmy award-winning crooner and lead singer of the internationally known vocal group, Tonic Sol-fa, indelibly stamps vocal jazz and swing with a contemporary punch. To the delight of both traditionalists and newcomers, he emerges as an original voice in the continuing tradition of the American singer.

Wanting to bring an innovative big band experience to audiences, Johnson put together a group featuring some of the best instrumentalists and arrangers in the Midwest – people who have toured with luminaries such as Aretha Franklin and Johnny Mathis, who are Music Educators of the Year, and who are integral members of collegiate jazz faculties. Johnson’s band includes piano, drums, bass, trumpet, trombone, alto, and tenor sax. His vision is creating a contemporary big band sound with a pop flair, honoring traditional big band legends, while giving the music his own twist – performing songs ranging from the Spiderman theme song to originals from U.S. songwriters.

Tickets for the Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience can be purchased Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Farber Box Office, Heritage Center, University of Dubuque, 2255 Bennett Street; by phone at 563.585.SHOW; or online at www.dbq.edu/heritagecenter.
