Spartan Pitching Dominates in Doubleheader Sweep

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team opened up Iowa Conference play with a bang, as they swept the Central College Dutch by scores of 7-1 and 1-0.

After the second batter of the game tripled down the left field line, UD starting pitcher, Chase Kueter, would go on to retire the next 22 Dutch batters before a single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke the streak. Kueter would pitch a complete game, allowing just two base runners. He would strike out six and induce 18 groundouts.

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, the Spartans took advantage of two Central errors and tied the game on wild pitch to bring home Dalton Garst. Will Doherty would come up with a two out single to put UD ahead 3-1. UD would post another three run inning in the sixth to blow the game open. In that sixth inning, UD would take advantage of yet another Central error and piece together three hits including a two-run single by Jack Lasswell.

The lone run in the nightcap came in the bottom of the third, when Dalton Garst tripled down the left field line and would score when the next batter, Jack Lasswell, flied out to left field.

For the second straight came the UD pitching was fabulous. This time it was Doug Van Dyke getting the start and mowing down Central hitters. Van Dyke worked seven innings, allowing just two hits and only walking one batter. Nathan Schneiderman came into relief in the eighth inning and struck out four of seven batters to earn his second save of the season.

UD’s defense did not commit one error in the two games.

The Spartans and Dutch will try to get game three of the series in this weekend but is up in the air due to a potential snow storm. Game three is tentatively scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday
