Spartans Championship Central for Fall 2017

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque is having a busy IIAC Championship Week beginning on Saturday, October 28. Saturday the women's and men's cross country teams compete at the 2017 IIAC Championships hosted by Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. Men's soccer (#5 seed) is on the road in the first round of the 2017 IIAC Men's Soccer Tournament hosted at #4 seed Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Neb. at 2:00 p.m. The Spartans (#4 seed) host the first round of the 2017 IIAC Women's Volleyball Tournament vs. #5 seed Coe College at 7:00 p.m. in Stoltz Sports Center. The women's soccer team earned the #2 seed and a first round bye in the 2017 IIAC Women's Soccer Tournament and will host #3 seed Central or #6 seed Luther tentatively scheduled f0r 7:00 p.m. at Oyen Field in Dubuque.
2017 IIAC Cross Country Championships:
All 18 women's and men's cross country squads from the Iowa Conference will descend on Wartburg College's campus in Waverly, Iowa for the running of the 2017 championships. The men's 8,000-meter race will take the starter's gun first at 11:00 a.m., followed by the women's 6,000-meter race at noon.
The 2017 Championship course is the Max Championships Cross Country Course. The starting line is west of the Wartburg soccer and lacrosse fields adjacent to a grove of trees. The start traverses both the soccer and lacrosse fields, heading toward a large orange banner. From there, the course moves across the railroad tracks and is mostly prairie thereafter. There are several small roads that the runners will cross; however, they will be covered with polyurethane matting. Both the men and women have very long 600-meter home stretches with the finish line adjacent to the starting boxes. Spectators have ample room to watch the races as they are able to cross the railroad tracke multiple times.
The awards ceremony occur at approximately 1:00 p.m. at the course's stage area.
The conference has one of the most competitive races in the Central Region, where five men's teams and three women's teams have been ranked at one time or another in the top 10. Three men's teams and two women's teams have cracked the top 35 nationally this fall.
