Spartans Cruise to 11-2 Win Over Wartburg

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Chase Keuter threw a complete game with no earned runs as the Spartan baseball team (13-12, 8-2 IIAC) upended Wartburg College (15-9, 6-4 IIAC) on Friday afternoon, 11-2.

Both pitchers cruised through the first two innings before the Spartans got in a self-induced jam in the top of the third. Kueter would give up his only two runs of the afternoon in the inning; however both were unearned due to two Spartan errors. Kueter go on the strand two runners to limit the damage. That was the only major jam Kueter and the Spartan defense were in all afternoon and Kueter did not allow a hit after the sixth inning.

The Spartan offense got kick started in the fourth inning after the inning began with a Wartburg error. Justin Jenson got UD’s first run across the plate in the inning after he singled to left field. Tyler Imirch would then split the left center field gap to score two runs and put UD ahead 3-2.

The UD offense would give Kueter breathing room as they scored four more runs in the sixth inning. In the sixth, Tyler Imrich doubled in the left centerfield gap for the second time and for his third RBI. Lasswell capped the four run inning with an infield single to score Tyler Lewan from second base. The Spartans would continue to add to their lead as they scored two runs in both the seventh and eighth inning.

The Spartans racked up 13 hits as a team on Friday afternoon, with five different players recording two or more hits. Jack Lasswell went 2-for-5, for his 13th multi-hit game of the season which leads the team. Will Doherty and Justin Jenson both lead the UD offense with three hits each against the Knights. Justin Jenson added three RBI’s with his three hits. Thomas Kempf came up with one hit to extend his on base streak to 13 games.

The Spartans and Knights resume their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
