The Spartans grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning after back to back, one out singles by Cody Kramschuster and Jack Lasswell and a walk to Garst to load the bases. Thomas Kempf put the ball his play and grounded out to the pitcher but it allowed Kramschuster to score. However, the Beavers would get the run right back in the bottom of the inning after a UD error and Beaver double. Buena Vista would grab another run in the sixth inning to take the lead after a Spartan error with two outs allowed a run to score.
After the Beavers score the first run of the game in the bottom on the third inning to grab a 1-0 lead, the Spartans responded in the top of the fourth. Jack Lasswell began the fourth with a single, followed by Dalton Garst reaching on an error and Thomas Kempf on a hit by pitch to load the bases with no one out. Still with no outs, the Beavers threw a wild pitch allowing everyone to advance and a run to score to make it 1-1. The Spartans would load the bases again in the fourth with no outs after another walk, but could not get another run across.

The Spartans would put runners on in the seventh and eighth innings but nothing would come out it before going 1-2-3 in the ninth and dropping game one, 3-2,

Chase Kueter was fantastic on the mound for the Spartans but got the tough, luck loss. Kueter threw all eight innings, scattering four hits and giving up three runs, only one of which was earned. He also struck out 12 Beavers without walking one. At the plate, Lasswell was the only Spartan with more than one hit. Designated Ian Meyer was 0-for-2 but had two walks.

The Spartans bats got going early in game two. In the top of the second, they came up with three hits including RBI knocks from Jarad Clevenger and Tyler Imrich to go ahead 2-0 early. The score would remain 2-0 in favor of UD until the sixth inning when the Beavers drilled a two-run home run to even the score.

The game remained a pitcher’s duel as the bullpens got involved. In the bottom of the ninth with the score still at 2-2, Buena Vista put two runners on but Nathan Schneiderman got a strike out and fly out to get out of the jam and send the game into extra innings. After the Spartans left one on in the top of the tenth, Schneiderman escaped yet another jam, stranding two after a strike out and ground out to send the game to the 11th inning.

UD’s bats finally broke open again in the top of the 11th. Dalton Garst singled to begin the inning and scored two batters later when Tyler Lewan double to score Garst from first. After a strikeout, UD added an insurance run when Will Doherty singled to left field to plate Lewan. Schneiderman would strike out the side in the bottom half of the inning to seal the 4-2 win and the doubleheader split.

The UD pitchers carried over the momentum from Kueter’s start in game one. Doug Van Dyke got the start for UD and went six strong innings, giving up just two earned runs on five hits for a quality start. Nathan Schneiderman was brilliant in relief. He did not surrender a run on just two hits in five innings. On the afternoon, the three Spartan pitchers combined to give up just six hits

Game three of the series is set for tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in Storm Lake.
