ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team scored three of the game’s final four goals, but their late push fell just short as they fell to the Augustana College Vikings, 12-11.

The Spartans scored less than 90 seconds into the game for the first 30 minutes it was a back and forth battle. The teams alternated goals in the first half to take a 4-4 score into halftime

Trailing 8-5 midway through the second half, the Spartans began their first push for a comeback. Breann Tjaarda scored three goals within a five minute span to make it a 9-8 game with 7:40 remaining. Augustana followed with two goals over the following 2:19 to expand their lead back to three goals.

Claire Carlson would not let the Spartans go down without one last rally. Carlson scored with 5:18 left to cut the deficit to two goals. After a Vikings goal with 2:14 remaining to push the deficit back to three goals, Carlson quickly answered with a goal to make it 12-10 with 1:52 remaining. After winning the ensuing draw control, Carlson found the back of the net again to make it a one goal game with 1:08 remaining. The Spartans would stop a late free position shot from Augustana but time would run out before the Spartans had a chance to do anything with it.

Breann Tjaarda’s seven goals is just one goal off of the single game school record of eight goals in one game. To go along with her four goals, Carlson added two assists and grabbed five found balls. Julianne Galante, Kathryn Silberstein and Cassandra Berger each had one assist against the Vikings.

The Spartans are back home for their final game of the year and senior day on Saturday, when they host Illinois Wesleyan at 1:00 p.m.
