Spartans Overcome Slow Start to Beat Marian

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team bounced back from a loss on Saturday to upend Marian University, 14-3 on Wednesday night.
Marian jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first goal of the game before the game was even three minutes old. That was the lone goal of the first quarter as both teams defense’s held steady. Marian once again scored in a period to move ahead 2-0 with 10:38 remaining in the second quarter.
UD’s offense began to gain some momentum when Tanner Weis record his first goal of the season with 7:17 left before half to cut the UD deficit to 2-1. With 2:26 left in the second, Ethan Senesac found the back of the net for the Spartans to even the score at 2-2, where it stay until halftime.
Nine minutes of scoreless action to open the second half before Michael Jango scored his fifth goal of the season to give UD their first lead of the contest. However, Marian would score 1:02 later to tie the game back up. With time winding down in the third quarter, Michael Jango found the back of the net once again with 14 second left to put UD ahead 4-3 and give them momentum heading into the final frame. UD used that momentum as UD’s Michael Julius scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter to put the game away for the Spartans.
Kyle Mullins was solid in the net for the Spartans, recording 13 saves over 60 minutes of action. UD grabbed five more ground balls than Marian by a count of 27-22 and the Spartans were also a perfect 10-10 on clears.
The Spartans are back at home on Saturday to host Concordia (Wisconsin) at 2:00 p.m.
