Three Spartans Obtain Iowa Conference Weekly Honors

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Three University of Dubuque student-athletes have earned Iowa Conference player of the week honors. Dalton Garst was named Baseball Position Player of the Week and Male Athlete of the Week, with Abby Willis and Blaze Murfin winning Field Athletes of the Week for Track and Field.

Dalton Garst picked up Baseball Position Player of the Week and Male Athlete of the Week honors by helping UD to a 3-1 week. UD grabbed a win over #4 Concordia-Chicago and a sweep of conference rival Simpson College. In the four games, Garst hit .471 (8-for-17) with eight runs scored, six RBI’s, two home runs and one double. Garst is the first Spartan to win baseball position player of the week honors since Austin McWhite did on March 26th, 2017.

Blaze Murfin took home Men’s Track and Field, Field Performer of the Week honors for his performance at the UW-Platteville Invitational. Murfin was the discus with a throw of 47.59m and finished second in both the shot put (17.00m) and hammer throw (54.31m). His throw of 17.00m in the shot put is the third best throw in the nation and a new school record. He currently sits in the top 20 in NCAA Division III in all three events.

Abby Willis used a new school record and the 4th best throw in the nation in the javelin to grab Women’s Track and Field, Field Performer of the Week. Willis won the javelin at the UW-Platteville Invite with a throw of 43.44m. She also finished sixth place in the discus with a toss of 41.29, which is good enough for 30th nationally.
