DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque was recently awarded two $1,000 American Legion of Iowa Foundation scholarships to assist veterans and their family members. Foundation Director George Raes presented the grant check to Rick Ernst (CSM, USA, Ret), veterans admission and assistance coordinator at UD.

“Through the generosity of organizations such as the American Legion of Iowa Foundation, student veterans and their families are able to focus less on working more hours to afford higher education and more on concentrating on the important task of academic success,” Ernst said. “The American Legion of Iowa Foundation’s scholarships make it possible for student veterans with financial need to afford college. It is a good feeling to be able to present these scholarships to deserving veterans.”

The scholarships recognize students for their academic achievement and reward them for their dedication to their country and commitment to higher education. In addition to this year, UD has received American Legion of Iowa Foundation scholarships in 2008, 2009, 2015, and 2016.

UD’s commitment to our nation’s service members and veterans dates back to World War II with the Navy’s V5/V12 programs and continues to the present day with a vibrant U.S. Army ROTC Eagle Detachment and a veterans support group for those on campus. Additionally, the University of Dubuque’s Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center opened in spring 2014 to provide student veterans a seamless transition from military life to civilian college life.

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. The not-for-profit is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to service members and veterans. The American Legion membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide.
