DUBUQUE, Iowa – University of Dubuque ranks third in the nation on Victory Media’s 2018 Military Friendly® Schools list for private schools offering a doctorate. In its 16th year, the Military Friendly® Schools list provides a comprehensive guide for veterans and their families using data sources from federal agencies, student veterans, and proprietary survey information from participating organizations.

“The Military Friendly designation is reflective of our continuing commitment to veterans and their families as well as a measurable and objective assessment of this commitment that prospective students can use when choosing a school,” said Rick Ernst (CSM, USA, Ret), veterans admission and assistance coordinator at UD.

The mission of Military Friendly® Schools is to make life better for veterans and their spouses by setting the standard for higher education institutions to provide positive opportunities.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using public data sources and responses from a propriety survey completed by the school. For the first time, student survey data was taken into consideration for the designation. More than 1,300 schools participated in the 2017-2018 survey with 849 earning the designation.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer), and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

There are over 160 military affiliated students at UD. The University’s commitment to service members and veterans dates back to World War II with the Navy’s V5/V12 programs and continues to the present day with a vibrant U.S. Army ROTC program. Additionally, the Sergeant Jeffrey B. Dodge Veterans Center provides veterans a seamless transition from military life to civilian college life.

“The University of Dubuque has the largest student veterans center in a multi-state area,” Ernst said. “We offer an unlimited number of the G.I. Bill®’s Yellow Ribbon Program participants, waived application fees, Military Child Grant tuition awards, and many other veteran-centric resources. We recently had a student veteran attend the Student Veterans of America 2017 Leadership Institute at the George W. Bush Presidential Center.”

The 2017-2018 Military Friendly® Schools list was published in the December issue of the G.I. Jobs magazine and can be found at www.militaryfriendly.com.
