Volleyball Adds Two Non-Conference Wins, Now 26-2

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque volleyball team closed out their regular season home schedule on Saturday with convincing wins over Wheaton College and Carroll University.

On homecoming, the Spartans overpowered Wheaton from the very start of the match as they jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead. The Spartans did not trail for one single point in the match and the latest that the game was ever tied was at 2-2. The Spartans registered 45 kills on 112 attacks for a hitting percentage of .277, while holding Wheaton to a hitting percentage of .070. In the first two sets, UD recorded hitting percentages of .316 and .393.  

The Spartans had an even offensive attack against Wheaton, having six players record at least four kills and no one with more than 11. Lauren Egnarski led the way with the 11 kills and right behind her was Rylee Andresen with 10. UD’s defense remained solid as they picked up 53 digs and seven total blocks. Jenna Runde led UD with 16 digs, Alyssa Cose added eight and both Grace Strawser and Karrah Davis pitched in seven.

After an hour break the Spartans took on Carroll and started out sluggish, dropping the first set 25-19 while hitting eight errors on offense. After the first set, UD settled down and returned to their typical game and never trailed again in a set later than 8-7. UD dominated the next three sets, racking up 66 digs, nine total team blocks, 45 kills and seven aces in the process.

Jenna Runde was her typical self, coming up with 17 digs, tied for the team lead with Karrah Davis who also had 17. Kara Wright also reached double digit digs with 10. Wright stuffed the stat sheet against Carroll, recording eight kills, two assists, 10 digs, one solo block and three block assists. Of the team’s seven service aces, Paige Harbort had four of the seven including three in a row at one point in the second set with two hitting the top on the net and rolling right over. The Spartans were everywhere at the net as six different Spartans had a hand in the nine blocks. Alyssa Cose recorded 32 assists for 69 total assists in the two games and 77% of UD’s assists on the day.

The Spartans travel to Wartburg College on Tuesday for a crucial Iowa Conference match.
