Volleyball Upsets #19 Cornell College in Five Sets

Mount Vernon, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team went on the road and toppled the #19-ranked Cornell College Rams 3-2 (19-25,24-26,25-16,25-20,15-12) after trailing two sets to none. The Spartans moved to 5-0 overall this season with the victory.

After going 4-0 this past weekend at the Lake Forest Invite the Spartans to did not get off to the start they wanted, dropping the first two sets, however both of those sets were close and competitive.

Things began to click on all cylinders in the third set where they won 25-16 in convincing fashion to keep the match alive. UD carried that momentum from the third set to the fourth and fifth sets, winning tightly contested sets, 25-20 and 15-12 to complete the comback over #19-ranked Cornell. 

Karrah Davis did everything for the Spartans on Wednesday night, coming up with 25 of UD's 54 kills, while also serving one, digging 18 Cornell attacks and blocking two others. However, Davis was not alone, Iowa Conference Player of the Week, Alyssa Cose, set 43 of the 54 kills for the Spartans and added 13 digs and three blocks.

As a team, UD had 26 block assists and two solo blocks for 15 team blocks in the upset. Cornell had just five total team blocks. Six different Spartans recorded a block, with Rylee Andresen leading the way with 10 assist and one solo block. the back end of the defense was very solid as well, as five Spartans reached double figure digs on the nigt. To go along with Davis' 18 and Cose's 13, Jenna Runde also had 18, with Grace Strawser adding 12 and Johanna Steggall with 11 more.

UD heads to the Loras College Tournament on Friday 9/8 for two matches against Hamline University and St. Olaf College at 3:00 and 5:00, respectively.
