STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team lost a heartbreaker on the road on Wednesday night, falling to Buena Vista 58-55 after leading by as many as 16 points in the second half.

Both offenses were sluggish from tip off, neither team reached double figures until Allison Roach made a jump shot with 2:48 left in the first quarter to give UD an 11-5 lead. The Spartans methodically built up their first half lead and stifled the Beavers offense to take a 35-21 lead into halftime.

After Abbey Meyer sank two free throws with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter to put UD up 46-32, the Spartans offense went cold and scored one point over the next 5:48. However, the UD defense kept the Spartan lead in double digits. UD’s offense stayed cold, while the Buena Vista offense slowly began to gain momentum in the final seven minutes of the game.

Allison Roach made a jump shot with 7:04 left in the game to extend the Spartans lead to 49-37. From that point on, Buena Vista outscored UD 21-6. Buena Vista grabbed their first lead since the 6:50 mark in the first quarter with just 11 seconds remaining in the contest. The Spartans had one last chance to regain the lead but the Beavers forced a turnover and raced down the court for a wide open layup to seal the game. After the Spartans limited the Beavers to just 17.9% shooting in the first half, the Beavers shot 52% in the second half, while the Spartans shot 21.4% in the half.

Allison Roach came off the bench to lead the Spartans in scoring with a game-high 17 points on 7-11 shooting from the field. Morgan Boer tallied 16 points of her own, while also grabbing nine rebounds. In her 14 minutes off of the bench, Kia Dwight did a little bit of everything for UD, totaling five points, three steals, nine rebounds and one assist. UD’s bench contributed 26 of the Spartans 55 points on the night.

Wednesday night was not the best shooting night for either team, the Spartans shot 30.2% (19-63) and the Beaves were 31.3% (20-64) from the field.  UD outrebound Buena Vista 48-45 and connected on 14-17 free throws.

UD hits the road again on Saturday, traveling to Coe College with tip off at 2:00 p.m.
