Women's Basketball Upends Buena Vista, 82-73

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team picked up their second conference victory of the season after running past Buena Vista University, 82-73. Abbey Meyer and Crystal Rios both lead the Spartans offense with 16 points each.

The UD defense got off to a slow start, allowing 29 first quarter points to Buena Vista and a 29-20 deficit after the first quarter. The Spartans cranked up the intensity in the second quarter, going on a 17-0 run over a four minute span to grab a seven point lead. In all, the Spartans would outscore the Beavers 30-14 in the quarter. UD stayed steady in the second half, responding to any threat Buena Vista made and allowing the Beavers within five points only one time in the final 20 minutes.  

Crystal Rios provided a huge spark off the bench for the Spartans, scoring a team high 16 points. The 16 points are a season high for Rios, whose previous season high in points was just seven. The bench as a whole was productive on Wednesday night, outscoring the Beavers bench 39-6. All 12 Spartans who saw the court made at least one field goal.

Morgan Boer racked up a double-double over her 32 minutes of play, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end. As a team, UD shot 49.2% (30-61) from the field in the contest and a sizzling 50% (10-20) from beyond the three point line. The Spartans held the Beavers to 41.2% (28-68) shooting from the field and force them into 15 turnovers.

The Spartans travel all the way to Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday to take on Nebraska Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m. Their next home contest is on January 17th when they host Coe College.
