DUBUQUE – On a rainy night at Oyen Field, the University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team fell to the Carroll Pioneers in a CCIW matchup, 16-5.

The Carroll Pioneers jumped on the slow-starting Spartans, scoring the first four goals before the game was nine minutes old. After the quick start from the Pioneers, the Spartans settled in and scored their first goal of the game with 12:09 left in the first half when Kori King found the back of the net for the 14th time this year. Carroll would get another goal four minutes later to make it 5-1 but the Spartans responded by getting that goal back, plus another. Claire Carlson scored the first of those two goals followed by Breann Tjaarda off of a pass from Julianne Galante. The Spartans would grab one more goal in the first half from Tjaarda, scoring as time was winding down in the first half to make it a 6-4 game at halftime.

However, the Spartans could not carry the momentum from the late first half goal as Carroll would shut down the Spartan attack and score the first eight goals of the second half and outscore UD 10-1 in that frame. Breann Tjaarda scored the lone goal in the second half for UD to collect a hat trick on the night and put her at 30 goals for the season.

Kaley Weir recorded a season-high 20 saves in the net for the Spartans. To go along with her hat trick, Tjaarda picked up six ground balls, won four draw controls and caused six turnovers. UD forced Carroll into 24 turnovers.

The Spartans are right back at home on Saturday when they host Elmhurst College at 12:00 p.m. at Oyen Field.
