DUBUQUE, Iowa – The 2018 University of Dubuque baseball season was one for the record books. The program won their first Iowa Conference Regular Season and Tournament Titles, and qualified for the program’s first regional, while breaking 31 school records in the process.
For the second consecutive season, the Spartans set a school record in wins, finishing with 26 wins in 2018. The season got off to a slow start, going 3-7 through the first ten games. After the spring break trip, the Spartans went 23-10, including ending the regular season on an eight game win streak and went into the NCAA Midwest Regional on an 11 game win streak.
Six every day players hit over .300 on the way to setting the single season team record for hits in a season. Jarad Clevenger led the Spartans in batting average over the course of the whole season, finishing with a .354 average in 39 games. Dalton Garst led UD in hitting in conference play, hitting .384 against Iowa Conference opponents. After struggling in the first half of the season, freshman Kellen Mitchell hit .381 in conference play to finish with an overall batting average of .292.
The Spartan pitching staff dominated opposing batters all season long, setting staff records for ERA (3.58) and strikeouts (292). Each of the weekend starters posted a 3.19 ERA or better, with two of the three posting a sub 3.00 ERA. Kueter led all UD pitchers with a 2.68 ERA and school records of innings pitched at 94.0 and strikeouts with 78.
Kueter and Doug Van Dyke now share the school record for wins in a season at seven. With his 78.1 innings pitched in 2018, Van Dyke wraps up his career, sharing the school record for innings pitched in a career. Van Dyke also set the career mark with 193 strikeouts and 19 wins. Nathan Schneider man continued to be brilliant out of the bullpen and now has the UD career saves record of 13 after his junior season.
