Baseball Falls in Series Opener at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team began the final weekend of the regular season with a pivotal matchup at Buena Vista. The Spartans dropped game one on Friday night, 3-2.

How it Happened
-In the top of the first the Spartans threatened, drawing a walk and coming up with a two hits but a caught stealing and fly out to right field kept UD off the board in the first.
-Buena Vista’s first two batters tripled and singled to begin the bottom of the first to put the Beavers up 1-0. Buena Vista would continue their rally to load up the bases with one out but Chase Kueter got the Beavers to roll over a pitch and into a 6-4-3 double play to limit the damage to one run.
-Zach McCoy would finally get the Spartans a run, drilling an opposite field home run to lead off the top of the sixth.
-Buena Vista would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning, plating run on a sacrifice fly.
-The see-saw battle continued as UD responded in the top of the 7th when Thomas Kempf delivered with a clutch, two-out single to bring JJ Valencia home from third.
-the Beavers would take the lead once again in the seventh, stringing together three hits for one run, making it 3-2
-The Spartans ran out of rallies and could not manage a hit over the final two innings to drop game one of the series.
