DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team stumbled in a midweek conference showdown against Coe College, falling 9-2 in 10 innings and 5-1 in seven innings.

How It Happened
-The Spartans struck first in the bottom of the first, when a shot to right field off the bat of Thomas Kempf scored one. The ball got by the Coe right fielder but a perfect 6-4-2 cut down another Spartan runner at the plate.
-The Kohawks threatened to get that run back in the top of the second, but Nathan Schneiderman struck out the side after loading the bases with no outs.
-In the bottom of the third, another Spartan came up with an RBI knock to right field, this time it was Justin Jensen delivering for the 2-0 UD lead.
-There was little action until the top of the eight when Coe put runners on second and third with no outs on Chase Kueter, who came out of the pen. The Kohawks scraped one run across before there was two outs. With two outs a line drive went off UD second basemen Jack Lasswell’s glove on a diving attempt to tie the game at 2-2.
-Thomas Kempf began the bottom of the eight with a double off the base of the left field fence but that was as far as the rally would go.
-Things came unraveled for the Spartans in the top of the 10th, as UD would commit four errors, leading the way to seven Kohawk runs, a deficit that was too much to overcome in the bottom half of the inning

How It Happened
-Coe drew first blood in the first inning but the Spartans answered back in the bottom half. Austin Vaughan, who was making his first career start, delivered a two-out, RBI single to center field to even it at 1-1.
-The Kohawks regained the lead in the fourth, scoring two runs on just two hits.
-Coe took advantage of a UD error in the fifth and promptly delivered a double to left field to extend the UD deficit to 4-1.
-The Kohawks tacked on another run in the seventh and the Spartans were never able to rally
