Kueter Goes Eight Strong to Lift UD Over Loras

The Spartans get the suicide squeeze down to perfection in the seventh inning. UD beat the Loras College Duhawks 6-2 on Dan. W. Runkle Field.

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque baseball team took the first of three regular season games against rival Loras College on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-2 win over the Duhawks.
How It Happened
-Loras came up with two-out hit into the right centerfield gap, just out of the reach of Justin Jensen and JJ Valenica, to give Loras a 1-0 lead.
-JJ Valenica reached in the bottom of the second with a two-out walk, and promptly stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jarad Clevenger then delivered a base knock to centerfield to plate Valencia and even it up at 1-1.
-Loras loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the third but Chase Kueter punched out a Duhawk to escape the jam without giving up a run.
-The Spartans busted through with another two-out hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, this time coming off the bat of Zach McCoy with the bases loaded. McCoy hit a line shot into the right centerfield gap to bring home two runs. Jarad Clevenger tried scoring from first but got thrown out at home on a perfect 9-4-2 relay to end the inning after UD grabbed a 3-1 lead.
-Loras cut the UD lead to one run in the seventh after the Duhawks converted on a double steal of second and third. UD committed a throwing error on the play to allow one run to score, but Kueter would strike out the following batter to allow just the one run.
-The Spartans and Jordan Goldstein converted on a perfect suicide squeeze in the bottom half of the seventh to get that run right back. UD added another run on a wild pitch and for good measure converted on another suicide squeeze to move ahead 6-2 after seven innings, where the lead would hold for the final two innings.
