ADRIAN, Mich. – The University of Dubque men's lacrosse team began their two game road trip to Michigan with a solid performance and a 14-9 win over Adrian for their first victory of the 2019 season.

Both team’s felt each other out for the first couple minutes of action before Adrian scored the first goal of the game four and a half minutes in. Just 70 seconds later, Jake Herman knotted the game up with a goal from UD off of a pass from Tanner Weis. The Herman goal started a flurry of goals for the Spartans. UD would score six of the final seven goals in the first quarter to lead 6-2 after one.

The scoring slowed in the second quarter, with both teams finding the back of the net just once, to send UD into halftime with the lead at 7-3.

UD came out of the halftime locker room clicking, getting goals from Davis Behrns and Zach Schmitt in the opening two and a half minutes of the half to extend their lead to six goals. However, Adrian would not go away quietly, scoring five of the next six goals to close out the third period and shrink the Spartan lead down to two goals heading into the final quarter.

UD and Adrian traded goals to open the fourth quarter before the Spartans sealed the game with three straight goals down the stretch for a 14-9 win.

Four different Spartans had multi-goal performances against Adrian, led by Dominic Mulcahy with four goals and one assist. Tanner Weis and Davis Behrns both turned in three goal efforts, while Jake Herman rounded out the group with two goals of his own.

Sam Kopecky got the start in the net for the Spartans and picked up his first career win, gathering 16 saves while facing 38 shots.

UD took full advantage of Adrian’s penalties on Tuesday night, scoring on three of their four extra-man opportunities. Despite giving Adrian eight extra-man opportunities of their own, the UD defense held them to just two goals on those eight tries.

The Spartans Michigan trip continues on Friday when they take on Kalamazoo at 5:00 p.m. CT.
