Men's Lacrosse Falls to Augustana In Conference Opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team began CCIW action with a 12-5 loss to the Augustana College Vikings.

Augustana kicked off the scoring less than 90 seconds in but it took the Spartans just four seconds to respond as Michael Jango raced down the field for the early 1-1 tie. UD would quickly take their first and only lead of the game at the 11:57 mark, when Zach Schmitt recorded an unassisted goal for his 7th goal of the season and a 2-1 UD lead.

The Vikings would score four unanswered goals before Tanner Weis scored his 15th goal of the season off a pass from Ben Gallagher to make it 5-3 in favor of the Vikings.  Jake Herman beat the first half buzzer, scoring with three seconds left in the second quarter to get the Spartans within three goals heading into the second half.

The Spartans were then held scoreless until there was 50 seconds left in the game, when Tanner Weis got his second goal of the contest to close the scoring for the game at 13-5.

Reigning CCIW Defensive Player of the Week, Samuel Kopecky, grabbed 14 saves in the loss. Kopecky also corralled one ground ball.

Both the Spartans and the Vikings each went 0-4 on extra-man opportunities.

The Spartans return home to host Whittier College at noon on Saturday, April 6th.
