Men's Lacrosse Rallies, Holds Off Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team made up their postponed game against Cornell College on Tuesday night, where they would rally from behind to beat the Rams, 11-9.

Before the first quarter was halfway over, the Spartans found themselves in a 3-0 hole after three quick goals from the Rams to start the game. UD would get two of those goals back within a 32 second span with goals from Adam Steingraeber and Michael Jango on even strength goals. The two teams would trade off the next two goals to end the first quarter 4-3 in favor of Cornell.

Cornell was able to score three of the first four goals of the second quarter to extend their lead to 7-4 with 3:44 remaining before half. The Spartans had a strong response and was able to respond with not one but two goals in the final two minutes of the first half to go into halftime trailing by just one.

It took awhile for the offense’s to get going again in the second half but the Spartans took full advantage, getting goals with 3:53 and 2:37 remaining in the third quarter, both from Tanner Weis, to grab their first lead of the day at 8-7. Cornell snuck a goal in before the third quarter horn, to even it up heading into the final frame.

Davis Behrns regained the lead for the Spartans as he found the back of the net 2:21 into the fourth quarter. The Rams once again reached even with the Spartans with 6:38 remaining but with 4:17 remaining, Michael Jango found Collin Perry for another go-ahead goal. The Spartans would be able to hold off the Rams from scoring again and UD’s Michael Jango added an insurance goal with 10 seconds left for good measure.

With that goal with 10 seconds left, Jango completed the hat trick for his game-high three goals. Jango had four points total as he added one assists to go with the three goals. Tanner Weis and Grady Sheehan were right behind Jango with two goals of their own.

Sam Kopecky was fantastic in the net for the Spartans, stopping 15 Cornell shots, allowing just nine goals on 41 shots.

The Spartans will have six days off before having a back-to-back on March 26th and 27th. UD will play at Monmouth College on the 26th and hosts Concordia Chicago on the 27th at 5:00
