Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up on Senior Day

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team suffered a 19-3 defeat on Senior Day at the hands of the Carthage College Red Men.

Carthage was on the attack early and often, firing off shots left and right in the opening minutes, but none of them went on net until their first goal at the 10:51 mark of the opening quarter. After being outshot by a 18-6 margin in the first quarter, the Spartans fell behind 4-0 heading into the second.

Spartans had three man-advantages in the second period but could not take advantage of any of them, while falling into a 7-0 hole by halftime.

After falling behind 11-0 midway through the third, Dominic Mulcahy finally broke the seal for the Spartan offense with 6:04 remaining in the third quarter. Mulcahy took a Zach Schmitt pass and fired it past the Carthage goalkeeper for the Spartans first goal.

Carthage would answer back with seven unanswered goals of their own to balloon the UD deficit to 18-1. On his senior day, Michael Jango recorded back-to-back goals at the 3:26 and 2:26 marks of the fourth quarter, for his 25th and 26th goals of the season and to pull the Spartans within 15.

The other Spartan senior was Sam Kopecky and he got the start in the cage for UD, where he would collect 18 saves after facing 66 shots. Kopecky would also cause one turnover and scooped up a team-high seven ground balls.
