Mar 15, 2019
Kalamazoo, Mich, - On a snowy Friday night in Kalamazoo, the University of Dubuque men’s lacrosse team fell victim to the Kalamazoo Hornets, 10-6.
Joey Maniaci wasted little time giving the Spartans the early lead on the Hornets, scoring the game’s first goal before the game was three minutes old. Both defense’s dominated over the following nine minutes with neither team scoring over that stretch until Davis Behrns scored with 2:26 left in the opening quarter. The UD defense held Kalamazoo scoreless for the opening 14 minutes but the Hornets scored two goals in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter to make it 2-2 heading into the second.
Kalamazoo would carry the momentum from the end of the first to the second and they found the back of the net two more times in the early portion of the second quarter to move ahead 4-2. UD got a pair of goals from Michael Jango and Zach Schmitt in the final 4:45 of the second quarter to send the game into halftime all square at 4-4.
Just like in the first half, UD struck first in the second as Davis Behrns picked up his second goal of the contest five minutes into the half. The game of runs continued as Kalamazoo would answer with a three goal flurry of their own to regain the lead at 7-5. UD would only be able to get as close as one goal again at 7-6, before Kalamazoo pulled away with three late goals.
Four Spartans on the night found the goal, led by Michael Jango and Davis Behrns with two each. Jango added an assist and team-high four ground balls to go with his two goals. Zach Schmitt and Joe Manicai were the other two Spartans to score, each with one.
Sam Kopecky racked up a save percentage of .583 on the night after stopping 14 Kalamazoo shots.
The Spartans have 10 days off before returning to the field on March 26th to take on Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois.
