MONMOUTH, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team picked up their third win in their last five contests after pulling out a win in the fourth overtime on the road at Monmouth College for the 7-6 victory.

Defense controlled the game early one, neither team scoring until Monmouth finally got on the board nine minutes. The Spartans answered right back, scoring two goals in 58 seconds to quickly grab their first lead of the game heading into the second quarter. Michael Jango scored his first and only goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter to make it three straight goals for UD and a 3-1 lead. However, the lead would not last until halftime as the Fighting Scots scored at the 11:59 and 0:28 marks of the second quarter to square it up at halftime.

UD's Zach Schmitt scored the lone goal from either team in the third quarter to give UD a one goal lead heading into the fourth quarter where things got crazy.

After continuing to trade off goals to begin the fourth, it looked as if Tanner Weis would give UD the win as he found the back of the net off of a pass from Gavin Hughes with 2:03 remaining in the game. The Fighting Scots would not quit and found a gap in the UD defense to get a goal and send the contest into overtime.

Through the first three overtimes and most of the fourth, the defense's dominated, limiting any scoring opportunities. It appeared is if the Spartans and Fighting Scots were heading for a fifth overtime until the Weis-Hughes combo struck again. With just 32 seconds left in the fourth overtime, Hughes once again found Weis, who converted for his third goal of the game, giving the Spartans the win and end the marathon.

Fittingly, the Weis-Hughes combo combined for eight points, four from each. Weis had one assist to go with his hat trick, while Hughes had a flipped stat line of three assists and one goal.

Samuel Kopecky was a rock in the net for the Spartans, stopping 18 shots while allowing just the six goals.

The Spartans have a quick turnaround, hosting Concorida Chicago at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday for the home opener.
