Men's Soccer Season Ends with Defeat to #23 Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men’s soccer team closed out the 2018 season with a road loss at #23 Luther, 1-0. This ends a run of 11 straight years of qualifing for the conference tournament for the men's program.

How It Happened
-The Norse constantly pressured the Spartans in the opening minutes and in the 20th minute off of a set piece, Luther scored the first goal of the game to move ahead 1-0.
-The Spartans almost answered back six minutes later with one of their two first half shots, but Gloire Luwara’s shot was saved
-Chirs Rigby had a free kick for UD in the in 35th minute and sent a perfectly lofted ball into the box, it went off another Spartan’s head but right to a Norse after for an easy clear out.
-Near the end of the first half, Luther was able to get multiple shots off in a matter of seconds but after blocking one and the other sailed high, the Spartans escaped more damage and went into halftime only trailing by one.
-One of UD’s best scoring chances of the night came in the 71st minute when Noah Clarke launched a shot but it was saved by a diving Norse goalie.
-With just two and a half minutes remaining Luther had another great chance to extend their lead on a free kick but Brandon White came up with a huge leaping save to keep the Spartans down one goal.

Notes
-Out of UD’s six shots, all but one of them went on goal.
-UD had more shots on goal than Luther, 5-4.
-This is the first year since 2006 that the program has not qualified for the conference tournament
