Murfin and Pointer Honored By A-R-C

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Colfay Pointer and Blaze Murfin of UD men’s track and field, are the first UD student-athletes to earn American Rivers Conference Athlete of the Week honors after their performances over the weekend.  

Murfin helped the Spartan men to a second-place finish on Saturday, Jan. 19 at UD's Solomon Butler Classic by winning both the weight throw and shot put in dominating fashion to earn A-R-C Track and Field – Field Performer of the Week honors.. In the weight throw, he set a new meet, facility and school record with his winning toss of 20.39m/66-10.75. The toss also puts him at atop of the NCAA Division III weight throw rankings. Murfin is also now ranked 1st in the shot put after his winning throw on Saturday traveled 17.49m/57-04.75. 

Murfin has become accustomed to receiving this honor, as it is his seventh Indoor Track & Field – Field Performer of the Week accolade (1/21/19, 12/10/18, 2/25/18, 2/11/18, 1/19/17, 1/22/17, 2/8/16).

Junior Colfay Pointer earned his second Indoor Track Performer of the Week award for his performance on Saturday.  He also won the award on Jan. 14th 2018.

Pointer ran to first-place finishes in the 600m and 200m dash at UD's Sol Butler Classic including beating the defending NCAA Division III 400m champion Patrick Mikel of Loras to win the 600 in a facility record, meet record and school record time (1:19.703), edging Mikel by two thousandths of a second.

His 200m winning time of 22.58 leads the conference and ranks 15th in NCAA Division III.  A season ago, Pointer was the conference champion in the 400m and runner-up in the 200m.

Pointer and Murfin will travel up north this weekend for the Minnesota State University Open.
