DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque battled through extra innings on Tuesday afternoon to capture the doubleheader over the UW-Platteville Pioneers  by a 2-1 victory in the opener and 5-4 in an 11 inning marathon in game two.

The first game was a pitching dual with the Pioneers jumping out to an early 1-0 lead at the top of the first. They would hold that lead until the Spartans took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on four singles, scoring two runs. The rest of the game would be scoreless and the Spartans ended with the victory. Game two was a back and forth battle for the win in extra innings. UD rallied back after falling behind 0-2 and once again it was the fourth inning where the Spartans scored three runs off three hits. Each team would add a run on the fifth and the Pioneers would knot the game at the top of the seventh after scoring one run on two hits. The next three innings both teams placed runners in scoring position, but were unable to get across homeplate. UW-Platteville would leave a runner at third and the Spartans would have another chance for the win in the botttom of the 11th inning. International rules placed Kylee Beidermann on second and she would steal to third base. A strike out swinging would leave here on third with one out and she would advance home on a throwing error by the catcher to third base ending the game with the Spartans winning 5-4.

Three Spartans would finish the day with two hits each. Morgan Turnmire would go 2-2 at the plate in the first game. Kaylin Featheringill and Allison Yager would both go 2-4 in game two to help lead the Spartans offense. The Spartans finished the day with a combined 12 hits, but would commit three errors in each game.

Starting pitcher Abby McBee would take the victory in game one after allowing just one earned run and striking out one in 4.1 innings of work. In relief it would be Kayla Breunig with the save, She tossed 2.2 innings and allowed no earned runs after facing 11 batters. Pitcher Lexi Schmidt would start game two and would go all 11 innings for the complete game victory. She faced 44 batters and allowed three earned runs while striking out two.

The Spartans are scheduled to host the Cornell College Rams on Wednesday, April 10 in a doubleheader at 3 p.m., but the forecast is rain and inclement weather all day.
