ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The University of Dubuque softball team made it a clean sweep on Sunday afternoon, but needed extra innings to campture an intense match-up over Illinois College in a nine inning marathon 7-6. UD faced off against hosts Augustana in the second game and captured their 13th win of the season by a 4-1 score over the Vikings.

Sunday's first game saw the Spartans fall behind 1-2 after one inning of action. UD scored a run in the top of the second to knot the game and then grabbed the lead in the third by a 4-2 margin. Illinois College had a big sixth inning where they scored three runs to take the lead 5-4. At the top of the seventh the Spartans the Spartans scored a run on a ground out to tie the game at 5-5. The game extended into the eighth inning with neither team scoring, but both left two runners on base. In the top of the ninth, UD opened with a couple of lead off singles and an error on the Vikings defense allowing two runs to cross the plate. The Spartans ended the inning with two runs off two hits and left oone on base. In the bottom of the ninth, UD's Lexi Schmidt fanned the lead-off batter for the first out. The next at bat was a double scoring the runner at second (international tie break rule). The next at bat was a pop up to second base and a lined out to third base for the Spartans victory. Schmidt went all nine innings, faced 39 batters and allowed just three earned runs. Kaylin Featheringill, Kylee Biedermann, and Deanna Origer all finished with two hits. Teammate Brandy Heraty led both teams with three RBI's.

In game two it was led by Augustana through three innings by a 1-0 score. The Spartans regained their energy in the fourth and would add a run to knot the contest at 1-1. UF continued to score with two runs in the fifh and a run in the sixth to extend the lead to 4-1. Abby McBee got the start on the mound and went four innings, striking out seven batters and allowing just one run, a homerun in the second inning. Kayla Breunig came in for relief and earned the win after facing 12 batters, striking out two and allowing just one hit the final three innings. Featheringill ended with two hits along with Morgan Turnmore who went 2-3 at the plate.

The Spartans (13-4 overall) now prepare for the tough American Rivers Conference play when they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to face the Coe College Kohawks on March 30 at 1 p.m. 

The 2019 American Rivers Conference schedule begins on Saturday, March 30 with eight of the nine schools in action to open their 16-game league schedule. Schools play a doubleheader versus each American Rivers opponent. On March 30th Buena Vista will host Wartburg, Central will travel to rival Simpson, Loras will play Nebraska Wesleyan in Dubuque, Iowa and Coe will host University of Dubuque. Luther opens 2019 conference play on Tuesday, April 2 with a road trip to Loras.

The 2019 American Rivers Conference Tournament will be held May 3-4 with the tournament's top seed serving as host. The tournament is a single-elimination format, consisting of six schools. The top two seeds from the regular season standings will receive first-round byes. The two opening-round games are played on Friday with semifinals and the final on Saturday.

The American Rivers Conference tournament champion receives the leagues' automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
