Softball Starts Play in Florida 3-1

CLERMONT/KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of Dubuque softball team has found the early going in the 2019 Spring Games to their liking after starting spring break 3-1 for first year head coach Jeff Lamb.
"I see good leadership by our veterans and our youth have been stepping up when needed and it's been a good balance for our team," said Lamb. "The pitchers are keeping us in games, out of jams, and not giving up a whole lot of free bases."
Lexi Schmidt is 3-2 on the mound and threw just one hit on Tuesday afternoon in a complete game 4-0 win over Lakeland University. Teammate Abby McBee allowed three earned runs in a 9-3 victory over Utica College. UD's trio of Kayla Breunig, McBee, and Schmidt, has a 2.77 earned run average this season with 25 strike outs and 15 walks.
"Our defense as a whole has been solid," added Lamb. The Spartans have committed just 10 errors in 264 chances for a season fielding percentage of .958.
The Spartans offense is being led by Deanna Origer (.414), Kaylin Featheringill (.400), and Rachel Trader (.333). UD has 61 hits in 225 at bats for a team average of .271 with 19 doubles, one triple (Origer), and one homerun (Featheringill).
The Spartans will enjoy a day of rest on Wednesday, March 13 before facing Lassell (4 p.m.) and Marywood (6 p.m.) on Thursday.
