Spartans Break Through for First Win of Season

ELMHURST, Ill. – The University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season with a thrilling, 9-7 victory over Elmhurst.

In a game that featured five lead, it was the Spartans who go on the board first with a free position shot goal from Kori King. After Elmhurst rattled off two straight goals, UD returned the favor with goals from Sara Rose and King, once again. The two teams each got one more goal in the first half to go into halftime with a 4-3 score in favor of the Spartans. It was their first halftime lead of the season.

Elmhurst came out in the second half firing, getting the first two goals of the half before the half was five minutes old. Shortly after, Rose picked up another goal to bring UD to even but less than a minute later the Blue Jays score again to regain a 6-5 lead.

The teams would continue to trade goals to give Elmhurst a 7-6 lead with under 15 minutes to play, however, the Spartans would not quit. Sara Rose got hot over the game’s final 12 minutes, scoring three goals to put the Spartans ahead 9-7, where the defense would step up and hold the score until the final horn.

Sara Rose led all scorers with five goals on nine shots. Two of Rose’s five of goals came by way of the free position shot.

UD outshot Elmhurst by a 20-18 margin and took control of the draw controls, winning 11 of 18.

This was the first win in the coaching career of Bridget Schirmers.

The Spartans have one final home game for the 2019 season on Wednesday, April 17th when they host Augustana at 5:00 p.m.
