Spartans Move On in A-R-C Tournament with 3-1 Win

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s soccer team scored three unanswered goals to upend the Central College Dutch 3-1 in the opening round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament.

How It Happened
-In just the fifth minute of play, Central’s Olivia Denham had a one man fast break down the right hand side of the field and got a shot off from about five yards out but Victoria Roethler came up with the diving save.
-Central continued to attack the Spartans, in the 28th minute the Dutch had a solid look off of a corner kick but Roethler came charging out and was able to deflect the ball high leading to another Dutch corner that UD would easily clear out.
-The Dutch struck first in the 33rd minute when Denham headed in a pass from Erin Manion.
-UD did not waste much time responding with a set piece of their own in the 38th minute. Lauren Cangelosi sent a low, line drive corner kick, right to an open Olivia Sullivan in the middle of the box where Sullivan would head it into the back of the net to even the game at 1-1.
-Early in the second half Lexus Rose hooked a shot from about 18 yards out, right into the top right corner of the net to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
-In the 67th minute, Lauren Cangelosi gave the Spartans some breathing room when she split defenders and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net to put UD up 3-1.
-In the 80th minute, Cangelosi almost gave the Spartans a three goal lead when she stole the ball from a Central defender and raced to the net but the shot was saved to set up a UD corner. Cangelosi then lofted the corner kick right to Amanda Chlebek but her header sailed high,

Notes
-First conference tournament win since 2014
- After getting outshot in the first half, UD outshot Central 10-2 in the second half.
-Cangelosi and Rose both had three points in the match
