How It Happened
-Chase Kueter got the start on the mound for the Spartans after throwing 132 pitches in UD’s win over Central on Thursday. He escaped his first jam of the day in the second inning as Coe had runners on second and third with two down, but Kueter forced a slow roller back to him for the put out.
-The Kohawks were the first team to strike on the gloomy morning with a solo home run off the bat of Jordan Kaplan, which cleared the left field party porch.
-Jordan Nelson took over for Kueter on the mound in the 4th inning and got two quick outs before a Coe double off the left field fence plated another Kohawk run to make it 2-0 through four.
-The Spartans offense finally broke through in the top of the 6th with a little two out rally. Zach McCoy singled before Thomas Kempf drilled a double off the top of the left field fence, missing a home run by inches, but allowed McCoy to score from first to make it 2-1. JJ Valencia followed Kempf with a line drive to left center but Coe made a running grab in the gap to prevent any more UD runs in the frame.
-The Kohawks answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, leading off the inning with a double. After a ground out to the second baseman, pulling the infield in. Coe singled up the middle to score one. The Kohawks would then string together four, two-out hits to add on three more runs to put UD in a 6-1 hole after six innings.
-The Spartans were never able to muster much of a rally over the final three innings and Coe would only tack on more runs to end UD’s season a win short of reaching the championship game.
