The Man Behind the Meet
Solomon W. Butler is one of, if not the greatest, student-athlete in the history of the University of Dubuque.  Butler earned letters in Track, Football, Baseball and Basketball over his years at UD before graduating in 1920. In 1918, he anchored the Drake Relays championship 4x100 relay, while also finishing second in the 100-yard dash. After winning the 100m dash and broad jump at the Penn Relays in 1919, he took first place in the broad jump with a record leap of 24’10” at the Inter-Allied Games in Paris, while also placing in the 100m dash.

Butler was one of three African-Americans to qualify for the USA National Team for the 1920 Olympics. Despite pulling a leg muscle on his first jump of the 1920 Olympics, he still managed to finish in 7th place in the broad jump at 21’7 7/8”. Butler would return home from the Olympics and win the broad jump at the AAU Championships with a jump of 24’8”.

This is the 100 year anniversary of Sol Butler setting the University of Dubuque school record in the long jump. His record mark of 24’9.75” (7.56m) still stands to this day.

Butler was a standout on the football field as well, playing for four different teams in the National Football League. He also made a brief appearance in baseball’s Negro Leagues, pitching professionally for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1925
