Box Score

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque volleyball team fell behind early two sets to none and could not recover, falling to Cornell College 3-1 (25-18,25-17,13-25,25-22).

After a back and forth opening set and the set tied at 17, Cornell would get hot and score eight of the next nine points to take set one, 25-18. Cornell stayed hot to open up the second set, building an 18-7 lead and eventually winning the set 25-17 to put the Spartans in a 2-0 hole.

The Spartans would not go quietly as they slowly built a 15-7 lead in the third set and cruised to a 25-13 set win to extend the match. UD would once again grab an early lead but could not pull like the second set. The Rams would eventually tie the set up at 11 and from that point on it was a back and forth battle. The Spartans were able to grab the lead again and push it up to as many as four at 18-14 but the Rams found a spark to tie the fourth set back up at 21 all. Cornell would go on to score four of the next five points with the help of three UD errors, to take the set and match

UD had a very balanced attack against the Rams on Friday night, as four different Spartans had at least seven kills. Kara Wright and Kendra Witte led UD with 12 and 11 kills respectively, with Rylee Andresen adding nine and Sarrah Farraday with seven.  Kate Messino assisted on 39 of UD’s 49 kills in the match.

After having a hitting percentage over .300 on Wednesday night against Coe, the Spartans hit just .190 on Friday night, while the Rams hit .223.

The Spartans are off for the rest of the weekend before hosting Wartburg College on Wednesday, September 19th at 7:30 p.m. in the Stoltz Sports Center.
