UD cruised to a 25-14 opening set win versus Alverno and never looked back to go on to sweep the Inferno 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-22). The Spartans only trailed for a total of six points over the three sets.

The Spartans had a diverse attack in the first match of the day against Alverno with 12 different players seeing action. Isabel Cleary led UD with 24 attacks and eight kills for a hitting percentage of .208. Karah Wright was dominant in her one set with seven kills. Lydia Kleckner and Shauna McAleer each added five kills. McAleer also added four solo blocks to go along with her five kills.

In the second match of the day the Spartans had little trouble with Grinnell, coasting to set wins of 25-15 and 25-17 to take a commanding 2-0 lead. A back and forth third set eventually led to a 22-17 lead in favor of the Pioneers. UD rattled off five straight points to suddenly tie the set at 22 all but the Pioneers held the Spartans there and took the set 25-23 to extend the match.

Grinnell had another late lead in the fourth set at 18-13 with their eyes on forcing a fifth set but the Spartans had other ideas. UD was able to knot the score at 21-21 when they got kills from Sarrah Farraday, Lydia Kleckner, Isabel Cleary and Kate Messino to take it to set and match point at 24-21. After two straight Grinnell points to make it 24-23, Sarrah Farraday came up with her match-high, 15th kill to give the Spartans the victory

The Spartans held the Pioneers to a lowly hitting percentage of .105 in part because of the 11 blocks that UD had on defense. Lydia Kleckner led UD with 4 solo blocks. Kara Wright was right behind Farraday’s 15 kills with 12 of her own. Kate Messino assisted on 50 of UD’s 56 kills against the Pioneers.

In between matches the Spartans honored their three seniors, Jenna Runde, Kendall Kauffmann, and Johanna Steggall.

The Spartans will now head into the American Rivers Conference Tournament on a four game win streak. UD earned a bye in the tournament and will play either Coe or Buena Vista in the semifinals on Thursday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m.
