Volleyball Rallies to Beat Central in Five Sets

PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque volleyball team fell behind 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Pella but stormed back to upend the Central College Dutch, 3-2 (19-25,20-25,25-21,25-21,15-6).

After getting upset on Friday night at Simpson, the Spartans came out of the gates slow on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-20 to dig themselves a hole. In the third set, it looked as if the Dutch were going to sweep the Spartans as they jumped ahead 12-7 but then things started to click for UD. UD scored 10 of the next 12 points to surge ahead 17-14. The Spartans would hang on to take the third set 25-21 and keep the match alive.

With the fourth set all even at four, the Spartans began their rally, scoring the next five to grab a 9-4 lead, a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the set to take the set 25-21 and fource a winner take all fifth set. In that fifth set, the Spartans made sure there was as little drama as possible, scoring the first three points and 11 of the first 15 to build a commanding 11-4 lead on the way to a 15-6 set win to seal the comeback.

In the comeback victory, three different Spartans reached double figures in kills. Sarrah Farraday led the way with 14, Rylee Andresen with 13 and Kara Wright with 12. UD made a living at the net on defense, blocking 10 Dutch attacks, led by Andresen who had two solo blocks and five assists. 

After having hitting percentages of just .074 and .044 in the first two sets, the Spartan offense started to click and hit .204, .136 and .333 in the final three sets to close it out. 

The Spartans close out American Rivers Conference play on Wednesday when they travel across town to take on Loras College.
