DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s basketball team took a break from conference play on Saturday to take on UW-La Crosse, losing 77-49.

The Spartan women got off to a slow start and could never recover on Saturday afternoon, they fell behind 20-7 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 37-17 at the break. Kia Dwight carried the UD offense in the first half, pouring in 10 of the team’s 17 points.

After shooting just 17.9% from the field in the first half, the Spartan offense found some life in the second half. The Spartans trimmed their 20 point halftime deficit to 13 by the midway point of the third quarter, however, the Eagles quickly responded with a 9-0 run over the next two minutes to push their lead to 22 and 55-35 lead after three.

UD had one last push in them in the fourth quarter, pulling within 13 points with 6:05 remaining after a Josie Thomas pull-up jumper. But once again, UW-La Crosse showed why they are undefeated and immediately answered back with a 12-0 run of their own to put the Spartans away.

Despite picking up two quick fouls in the first quarter, Kia Dwight still played 30 minutes and led UD with 19 points, the lone Spartan in double figures. Abigail Zurcher was nearly perfect from the free throw line, making five of six and finished with nine points.

In the second half, the Spartans shot 43.5% from the field, bouncing back from the 17.9% performance in the first half to finish at 29.4%.

The Spartans will host Augustana College on Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m. for the second of three straight home contests for the Spartan women.
