Women's Hoops Falls in Overtime

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - In a back and forth battle with Carleton College, the University of Dubuque women's basketball team fell on Tuesday night, 98-93 in overtime.

The Spartans got off to a slow start, falling behind 5-11 before quickly turing that deficit into a 19-13 lead within two and a half minute span in the middle portion of the first quarter. After that neither team led by more than four for the rest of the half and UD took a 43-40 lead into the break. In the first half, Lexi Daniels hit four of five from three pointers in the first half to lead all scorers at the break with 12 points.

UD scored the first bucket of the half to go ahead 45-40, which quickly turned into 58-50 Carleton lead at 5:38 point in the third.  UD continued to trail until, Kia Dwight with 3:23 for one point lead. Dwight scored again eight second later to put UD ahead 83-80 with 2:19 remaining.

Carleton rallied, converting a layup with 24 second left to take the lead at 84-83. After UD missed their shot on the ensuing possession,Carleton connected on both free throws to push their lead to three. With the Spartans trailing by three, Josie Thomas drilled a three pointer for the Spartans to even up the score at 86 all with 0.9 secondsleft. The Spartans halted Carleton on the following possession to force overtime.

Late in overtime in the Spartans were trailing but kept extending fouls to keep them within reach. Josie Thomas could not connect on a three pointer to tie the game like she did at the end of the first half and Carleton sank their two free throws to seal the game.

Along with her clutch shot to force overtime, Josie Thomas led the Spartans with 18 points on seven of 17 shooting from the field. Three other Spartans joined Thomas in double figures. Kia Dwight had 16, Lexi Daniels had 15 and Abigail Zurcher added 13.
