Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

BETTENDORF, Iowa – The University of Dubuque women’s lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 16-5 loss to NAIA St. Ambrose Fighting Bees.

St. Ambrose took the opening draw control and raced right down the field to score the first goal of the game just 10 seconds in. The Fighting Bees, who are receiving votes in the NAIA national rankings, would score the first three goals of the game before Kori King got the Spartans on the board in the fourth minute. St. Ambrose would go on to score 10 straight goals over the final 26 minutes of the first half to send the Spartans into halftime down 13-1.

UD came out firing in the second half, getting the first two goals of the second half from King and Sara Rose on free position shots in the half’s first 10 minutes to make it 13-3. The Spartans went quiet for 10 minutes before scoring two more times on free position shots, this time from Julieanne Galante and Carolyn Clemens to outscore the Fighting Bees 4-3 in the second half.

Kori King was the lone Spartan with multiple goals, scoring two on just four shots. Goalie Kaley Weir was able to rack up 16 saves in the 60 minutes of action.

This was the first game for head coach Bridget Schirmers at UD.

The Spartans will have their home opener on Saturday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m. when they host Albion College.
