Division of Computing and Applied Technology
The Division of Computing and Applied Technology prepares students to use technology, information, and data to solve complex problems and create meaningful opportunities across business, organizations, and society. Through the study of and application of computer systems, hardware, software, networks, and information security, students develop the technical expertise, analytical reasoning, and communication skills needed to connect technology with the people, organizations, and communities it serves. Coursework throughout the division integrates technical knowledge with business, communication, and analytical foundations, preparing students to understand both how technology works and how it can be applied effectively and responsibly in real-world contexts.
Students pursue different pathways within this shared technological and analytical foundation. Computer Information Systems focuses on applying technology to business needs, preparing students' roles in areas such as systems and business analysis, data management, and technology project management. Computer Information Technology emphasizes the design, implementation, and administration of networks and computer systems, preparing students for careers in network management, systems administration, or systems engineering. Cybersecurity focuses on protecting information, systems, and networks from evolving threats while applying technology to investigate and respond to, preparing students for careers in areas such as digital forensics, information security, and IT infrastructure security. Students can also complement their studies with a minor in Computer Security, providing a foundation in protecting software and equipment against hacker attacks, or a minor in Data Analytics, an interdisciplinary program that equips students with data analytics theory and tools informed by the lens of their chosen discipline.
Across all programs, students develop the ability to analyze information, solve technical problems, communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences, and adapt to an ever-evolving digital landscape. The division prepares graduates to apply technology thoughtfully, securely, and creatively in their professions and to contribute to organizations and communities increasingly shaped by digital information and technological innovation.
