Annual Lectureships

Each year the seminary brings outstanding writers and teachers to Dubuque to share their insights and scholarship with the community. Lectures are livestreamed and open to the public.

The Berger Lecture on Preaching
Established by alumni/ae and friends of the seminary in memory of the late professor of preaching, David I. Berger, this lecture series focus on preaching, teaching, and scholarship. Dr. Berger came to Dubuque in 1914 from Vienna, Austria, speaking no English at the time of his arrival. He taught at UDTS after receiving his ThD and DD degrees. Recent lectures have been delivered by noted scholars such as Craig Barnes, Jana Childers, Luke Powery, Anna Carter Florence, Ellen Davis, Mary Hulst, Jonathan Brooks, and Vilmarie Cintron-Olivieri.

The Florence L. Warren Lecture on Religion and Culture
This lecture series, established through the generosity of Florence Warren, a late friend of the seminary, who had a long and intense interest in the role of religion and religions in the history of humanity. Her gift in 1979 established the annual lectureship that continues to this day. The Warren Lecture has brought to UDTS distinguished scholars who have lectured on topics related to religion and culture. Some of those who have delivered these lectures are Kenda Creasy Dean, Joseph Small, Jay Moon, Philip Jamieson, Susan Pitchford, and Amanda Benckhuysen.

The John P. Woods Distinguished Lecture on Religion and Culture
The Woods Lecture is made possible by a gift from the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in honor of their former pastor, the Rev. Dr. John Woods in 1987. Lecturers have included Chip Andrus, Katharine Henderson, Jeff Barker, Carol Howard Merritt, Alan Roxburgh, Danny Carroll, Emerson Powery, Matt Bloom, and Jerry Cannon.
