English Curriculum

Curriculum Requirements

All bachelor's degrees require a minimum of 120 credit hours, inclusive of UD general education and major requirements as well as elective courses.

The English major requires 36 credit hours and may be completed with a focus area in either literature or writing.

Literature Focus:

Select two courses, one from each of the following pairs:

  • ENG 321: American Literature Survey I (3) or ENG 323: American Literature Survey II (3)

Select two courses from the following, including one focused American or British literature course:

  • ENG 260: Literature and Culture (3)

  • ENG 325: Selected U.S. Writers (3)

English Minor:

English is the study of the structural, moral, and aesthetic aspects of language and literature. At the University of Dubuque, your studies will connect you with students and faculty united by a common love of language and literature in its many forms. You will leave ready to build a career in many fields, including education, law, public service, nonprofit leadership, publishing, or business.

The English minor is designed to be as flexible as possible in allowing student to choose English courses which will best reflect their interests and support their other areas of study.

An English Minor consists of 15 credits. Students may take ENG 112 Introduction to Literature (3) and/or any 200-level or above English electives to reach the total required hours.
