Division of Social Sciences
The Division of Social Sciences prepares students to understand people, organizations, institutions, and societies and to apply that knowledge in ways that contribute to communities and the professions they enter. Through the study of human behavior, social relationships, social structures, leadership, justice, and social change, students develop the ability to think critically, evaluate scientific evidence, and apply theoretical and practical knowledge to complex human and social challenges. Across psychology, sociology, criminal justice, and military science, students explore how individuals and groups develop, interact, organize, and respond to changing circumstances while developing the analytical, interpersonal, leadership, and ethical skills necessary for effective professional and civic engagement. The division prepares students for careers and further study in criminal justice, human services, law, psychology, sociology, military leadership, and related fields.
The division also houses the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, administered by the Division of Military Science at the University of Northern Iowa. Credits earned through the program count as general elective credit toward bachelor's degree requirements or toward a minor in Military Science. All instructors are career U.S. Army Officers or NCOs, and the program is designed as a four-year course of instruction, though students with prior military experience or who complete the Leader Training Course (LTC) may finish in two years. Students seeking a commission as a U.S. Army officer are required to contract with the Department of the Army during the final two years of the program.

Criminal Justice is the study of the major components of the criminal justice system - law enforcement, courts, and corrections. You will also be prepared for jobs in community service, mental health services, and human services.
