Spartans 5th in NCAA Central Regional

The 2014 NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships at Five Flags Center in downtown Dubuque, Iowa was held on March 1. The qualifier will send 30 wrestlers to the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships on March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The University of Dubuque will send four national qualifiers. Leading the way was Nick Drendel who claimed the 149 lbs. title. Derek Mizaur finished 2nd at 165 lbs. Nicholas Rivera claimed 3rd in the 125 lbs. class along with teammate Brian Travis who placed 3rd at 141 lbs. The four qualifers helped the Spartans to a 5th place finish with 90 points.

Spartans Off to 4-0 Start

The University of Dubuque Softball team escaped the cold weather outside for four games inside the Rochester Dome over the weekend at the Luther Tournament. The Spartans went 4-0 with wins over St. Norbert, Gustavus-Adolphus, UW-Stevens Point, and Carleton. Sophomore Tori Woltz led the UD offense with nine hits including three doubles and a home run. Junior Hannah Koerperich earned three of the four wins in 13 2/3 innings of work.

Baseball Adds a Pair of Doubleheaders

The University of Dubuque Baseball team has added a pair of doubleheaders to its 2014 schedule. The Spartans will travel to St. Louis, Mo. on Friday, March 7th for two games against Westminster College beginning at Noon. UD has also added a twinbill versus Elmhurst College on Monday, March 10th in Jacksonville, Ill. at Lenz Field.

All-Iowa Conference Honors for Norris, Frazier, & Heffernan

A trio of University of Dubuque Men's Basketball student-athletes earned All-Iowa Conference (IIAC) honors as selected by the IIAC Coaches. UD sophomore Andre Norris made the jump from Second Team last season to First Team All-IIAC in 2014. Spartans senior Chris Frazier and junior Gage Heffernan were named Second Team All-IIAC honorees. Dubuque finished the year with a 21-5 overall record and second place in the IIAC at 10-4.

Kotas & Goetz Named All-Iowa Conference

University of Dubuque Women's Basetball student-athletes Jenna Kotas and Jessica Goetz each earned All-Iowa Conference (IIAC) honors as voted by the leagues coaches. Kotas was named to the First Team while Goetz earned Second Team recognition. The Spartans finished the season with an overall record of 17-9 and tied for second place in the IIAC at 10-4. The second place finish was the best in the programs history.

Racing Past the Color Line: Sol Butler and Paul Robeson in Collegiate Athletics

The University of Dubuque’s Charles and Elizabeth Bisignano Art Gallery, located in Heritage Center, will open the exhibition Racing Past the Color Line: Sol Butler and Paul Robeson in Collegiate Athletics on Monday, February 24 at 12:30 p.m. The exhibition focuses on the college experience of two exceptional African American athletes at predominantly white institutions during a period of widespread segregation. Before graduating in 1919, Sol Butler at Dubuque German College (now the University of Dubuque) and Paul Robeson at Rutgers College (now a state university) led their teams to unprecedented success, while paving the way for future African American students.

Spartan Women Set Three School Records at UW-Platteville

The University of Dubuque Women's Track & Field team continued to rewrite the UD Record Book on Friday night at the UW-Platteville Final Qualifying Meet. Rachael Busjahn, Nicole Forson, and Nickolette McKenzie all set new school records. No team scores were recorded.

Spartans Open 2014 Campaign

The University of Dubuque Baseball team was finally able to begin the 2014 season after having its first three games of the season cancelled because of severe weather. The Spartans lost the opener 2-0 against Westminster College (2-0) before a 5-2 defeat in the second game. UD played errorless defense on the day. Freshman Daniel Casanova reached base five time in seven plate appearances.

Valcin Increases Division-III Best Pole Vault Height

The University of Dubuque Men's Track & Field team competed at the UW-Platteville Final Qualifying Meet on Friday night in hopes in securing a spot in the up coming Division-III NCAA Indoor Championships. The Spartans won one event and set one school record. No team scores were recorded.

Walk-off Home Run by Billesbach Moves UD to 5-0

The University of Dubuque Softball team improved to 5-0 to start the season with a two run walk-off home run by Ainsley Billesbach. UD won 6-4 over Hamline. The Spartans lost a pitchers dual 2-1 against UW-Stout in their final game before the spring trip. Dubuque finished 5-1 at the Rochester Dome over the last two weekend trips.

The University of Dubuque wrestling team is anxious to begin the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships this weekend at the NCAA National Championships at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids on March 14-15. The Spartans qualified four wrestlers for the championships Nicholas Rivera (125 lbs.), Brian Travis (141 lbs.), Nick Drendel (149 lbs.), and Derek Mizaur (165 lbs.).

Valcin Qualifies for NCAA Division-III Indoor Track Championships

University of Dubuque junior Rick Valcin was announced as 1 of 15 individuals who will complete in the Men's Pole Vault at the upcoming NCAA Division-III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Valcin enters the championships ranked first with a mark of 5.10m (16' - 8.75"), 5.5" ahead of second place. The pole vault will take place on Friday, March 14th beginning at 11:00 am.

Spartans Lockington Honored by USTFCCCA

University of Dubuque Track & Field Graduate Assistant Coach Patrick Lockington was named United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division-III Central Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year. A first year assistant, Lockington made an immediate impact for UD as the pole vault and high jump coach. Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA members.

Valcin Earns All-American Honors

University of Dubuque Spartan junior Rick Valcin earned All-American honors in the Pole Vault at the 2014 NCAA Division-III Indoor Track & Field Championships. Valcin finished in second place due to tiebreaker rules after Valcin, Michael Bennett of the Univ. of Chicago, and Rob Rohe of UW-La Crosse all failed to clear 4.95m. As a result of all three competitors missing, the winner was decided by misses. Bennett earned the title of national champion having not missed before the final round. Valcin took second with one miss and Rohe came in third with two failed attempts. Valcin's height of 4.90m (16' - 0.75") was his fourth highest final jump of the year.

Spartan Baseball in Fort Myers

The University of Dubuque Baseball team traded in cloudy 30 degree weather in Dubuque for the sunshine and 80 degree temperatures in Ft. Myers beginning on March 15th. The Spartans will play seven games against fellow Division-III schools over the course of six days. UD begins the trip on March 16th against Bethel University (Minn) and wrap up the trip on March 21st against UMass-Boston. Dubuque went 1-3 with trips to Fulton, Mo. and Jacksonville, Ill. before the trip to Florida.

Spartans Beat UW-Platteville

The campuses of the University of Dubuque and UW-Plattville are separated by just 23 miles, today they played a baseball game nearly 1,500 miles from home at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Spartans broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh on a two-run triple by Vince Parisi. Daniel Casanova led UD offensively by going 3-4 with a double, two runs scored, and three stolen bases.

Spartans Fall to SUNY-Plattsburgh & Wooster

The University of Dubuque and SUNY-Plattsburgh State Baseball teams scored early in the game and late in the game with little in between. The team combined for three runs in the first and five runs in the ninth as SUNY-P came out ahead 6-3 on Wednesday morning at the Gene Cusic Classic. UD returned to the diamond on Thursday against the College of Wooster, losing 12-1. UD is now 3-7 on the year with one game remaining on the spring trip.

UD Baseball Victorious on Final Day in Florida

The University of Dubuque Baseball team closed out their 2014 spring trip in exciting fashion against UMass-Boston. Down 4-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Spartans scored three runs to win 5-4. The winning run scored on a two-out RBI single by Vince Parisi. Justin Naval pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the season. UD improved its record to 4-7 overall and 3-4 on the spring trip.

Speaker on Human Trafficking to Present at the University of Dubuque

On Thursday, April 3, Teresa Downing-Matibag, executive director of The Network Against Human Trafficking (NAHT), will speak on the topic of human rights violations, and now this modern-day slavery can be stopped. Her lecture will begin at 6:00 p.m. in Blades Chapel on the University of Dubuque campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Sol & Paul: A One-Act Play

The Babka Theatre in the University of Dubuque’s Heritage Center will host the premier performance of the one-act play Sol & Paul on Thursday, April 3 at 7:30 p.m. The play imagines a conversation that may have taken place between star athletes Sol Butler and Paul Robeson at the famed Penn Relays track meet in 1916.

Spartans Lose MWLC Opener

After a season as an independent and three non-league games, the University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse team played its first Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) on Tuesday night. The Spartans faced a familiar opponent by making the short trip down Loras Blvd. to take on the Duhawks. After falling behind 6-1 at the half, UD fought back with six second half goals for a 11-7 loss to Loras.

The University of Dubuque Baseball game against Central College scheduled for Friday, March 28th has been postponed to Sunday, March 30th due to unplayable field conditions following rain on Thursday. The Spartans and Dutch will open the 2014 Iowa Conference season on Saturday, March 29th at 1:00 pm.

Kuehn Signs with Mannheim Tornados

University of Dubuque alum Spencer Kuehn has been announced as the newest member of the Mannheim Tornados. A First Team All-Iowa Conference selection in 2013, Kuehn is the first Spartans baseball player to sign a professional contract since Joe Hapanionek signed deals in 2005 and 2006. Kuehn will report to Mannheim, Germany in March to begin preparing for the season opener on April 6th.
