Racing Past the Color Line: Sol Butler and Paul Robeson in Collegiate Athletics

The University of Dubuque’s Charles and Elizabeth Bisignano Art Gallery, located in Heritage Center, will open the exhibition Racing Past the Color Line: Sol Butler and Paul Robeson in Collegiate Athletics on Monday, February 24 at 12:30 p.m. The exhibition focuses on the college experience of two exceptional African American athletes at predominantly white institutions during a period of widespread segregation. Before graduating in 1919, Sol Butler at Dubuque German College (now the University of Dubuque) and Paul Robeson at Rutgers College (now a state university) led their teams to unprecedented success, while paving the way for future African American students.

Live at Heritage Center presents Soweto Gospel Choir

Heritage Center, the University of Dubuque’s performing arts, worship, and campus center, continues its inaugural Live at Heritage Center Performing Arts Series with Soweto Gospel Choir on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m. Based in Soweto, South Africa, the choir’s current tour “Divine” celebrates 10 years of touring North America. Dubuque is the only Iowa stop on this 11-week 2014 national tour. The multi award winning ensemble is composed of twenty-six of South Africa’s best voices and celebrates the unique and inspirational power of gospel music. The choir recently offered numerous public musical tributes to the life and legacy of the late Nelson Mandela.

Phi Theta Psi Hosts Local Event for Volunteers to Shave Their Heads in Support of Childhood Cancer Research

On Tuesday, March 11, the University of Dubuque chapter of Phi Theta Psi will host the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven charity dedicated to raising money for childhood cancer research. The Foundation will hold one of its signature head-shaving events at McCormick Gym at University of Dubuque, where several individuals will shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to conquer childhood cancers.

University of Dubuque ROTC to Host East Dubuque Run for the Troops 5k Run/Walk

On Saturday, March 1, the University of Dubuque ROTC detachment will host a Run for the Troops 5K Run/Walk in East Dubuque, IL. Run for the Troops is a timed 5K event to raise money for an ROTC cadet team to compete at the 2014 Bataan Memorial Death March in White Sands, New Mexico. This competition gives recognition to those who have fallen, and supports those veterans who endured the Battle of Bataan.

Spartans Finish Second at Home Meet

The University of Dubuque Men's Track team hosted the 2014 UD Spartan Invite in the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center on Friday night. The Spartans won five events and were runner up in four more. UD also set two school records and tied a facility record. Dubuque took second as a team with 155 points.

UD Women Win the UD Spartan Invite

The University of Dubuque Women's Track team defended its home turf on Friday night with a win at the 2014 UD Spartan Invite. The UD women finished with 176 team points. The Spartans had seven wins and six second place finishes. Brenda Breimon, Rachael Busjahn, and Nickolette McKenzie all set new school records.

#2 Seed Men's Basketball Prepares for IIAC Tourney

The University of Dubuque men's basketball team stopped a three game skid on Saturday to finish a game out of the IIAC title with a 10-4 conference mark. The #2 seeded Spartans beat the Luther Norse 72-66 and will host Tuesday's winner of the #3 seed Loras Vs. #6 seed Luther game in Stoltz Sports Center on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m.

Spartans Close Regular Season on Winning Streak

The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team closed the 2013-14 regular season on a four game winning streak. The Spartans 83-76 victory over Luther on Saturday afternoon helped UD to a program best second place finish in the Iowa Conference (IIAC). UD was lights out from the free throw line, shooting a season best 87.1% (27-31) from the charity stripe including making 14 straight the end the game.

Spartans Begin Year Two of Women's Lacrosse

The University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse team began its second season with two games over the weekend inside the Augsburg College Athletics Air Structure (Augsburg Dome). The Spartans opened on Saturday night with an 11-8 loss against the hosts for the weekend, Augsburg College. UD finished the trip against third year NAIA Midland University and a 23-10 defeat. The ten goals for first year head coach Kendall Loggins' squad ties a school record for goals in a game.

Garcia Claims IIAC Performer of the Week Honors

University of Dubuque senior Nick Garcia was named IIAC Men's Tennis Performer of the Week. Garcia went 4-0 on the week at #1 Singles and #1 Doubles as UD went 1-1 as a team. He extended his winning streak at #1 Singles to five games and ten sets with 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1 wins on Saturday at Knox. In doubles play, he teamed with Dishon Deering to win 8-5 vs. Ripon and 8-6 vs. Knox.

Kotas Named IIAC Female Athlete of the Week

University of Dubuque Women's Basketball player Jenna Kotas has been named Iowa Conference Female Athlete of the Week and Women's Basketball Performer of the Week. Kotas averaged 19.0 points per game as UD went 2-0 and finished the year on a four game winning streak.

Spartans Upset in IIAC Tourney

The University of Dubuque Women's Basketball team was upset in the First Round of the Iowa Conference Tournament. The Spartans 63-59 loss to Buena Vista on Tuesday night proved the old saying that the hardest thing in sports to do is beat a team three times in a season. Jenna Kotas recorded a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. UD finishes the year with a 17-9 overall record.

Live at Heritage Center presents E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web

Heritage Center, the University of Dubuque’s performing arts, worship, and campus center, will present Charlotte’s Web, performed by Theatreworks USA, on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. This production is based on E.B. White’s loving story of the friendship between a pig named Wilbur and a little gray spider named Charlotte. Wilbur has a problem: how to avoid winding up in the slaughterhouse. Enter Charlotte, a fine writer and a true friend, who assures Wilbur she will save him. Charlotte hits on a plan to fool Farmer Zuckerman – she will create a “miracle”. Spinning the words “Some Pig” in her web, Charlotte weaves a solution which not only makes Wilbur a prize pig, but ensures his place on the farm forever. This treasured tale, featuring mad-cap and endearing farm animals, explores bravery, selfless love, and the true meaning of friendship.

Men's Basketball Stunned by #6 Seed

The University of Dubuque #2-seeded men's basketball team lost to the #6-seeded Luther College Norse in the IIAC Tournament semi-finals by a 83-87 score. The Spartans led by as much as 18 points with eight minutes left of the game before the Norse shot their way back into the game. Luther made all eight of their final free throws with under four and a half minutes to play as the Spartans missed two out of three attempts at the line.

Softball Begins in Dome

Plenty of Iowa Conference softball teams start their season this weekend, including the University of Dubuque Spartans. Not many teams competing outside in the single digits, UD begins under the warm confines of the Rochester Regional Stadium on the campus of Rochester Community and Technical College in Rochester, Minn.

Spartans Set for Iowa Conference Indoor Championships

The University of Dubuque Track & Field teams are set to compete in the 2014 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships on the campus of Luther College. The championships are set to begin on Friday, February 28th with the Heptathlon and Pentathlon at 10:0 am. Field Events begin at 11:00 am with the Pole Vault. Track Events get started with the Women's 5,000m Run at 6:00 pm. Action continues on Saturday, March 1st at 9:00 am.

Spartans Place 11 on All-IIAC Team

The University of Dubuque Men's Track & Field team finished in fourth place with 98.5 team points at the 2014 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships. The Spartans had a school record 11 individuals earn All-IIAC while also winning two events. UD dominated the pole vault on Friday afternoon with Rick Valcin winning and Nicholas Kazmierczak finishing second. The Dubuque 4x800m Relay team set a new school record.

Spartans Make History at IIAC Championships

The University of Dubuque Women's Track & Field team made history at the 2014 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships with a third place finish, the best indoor finish in school history. The Spartans also claimed its first event winner with Nickolette McKenzie victories in the long jump and triple jump. In total, UD earned ten All-IIAC honors and set six new school records. UD also raised the bar with a school record 90 team points.

Spartans 5th in NCAA Central Regional

The 2014 NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships at Five Flags Center in downtown Dubuque, Iowa was held on March 1. The qualifier will send 30 wrestlers to the 2014 NCAA Division III National Championships on March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The University of Dubuque will send four national qualifiers. Leading the way was Nick Drendel who claimed the 149 lbs. title. Derek Mizaur finished 2nd at 165 lbs. Nicholas Rivera claimed 3rd in the 125 lbs. class along with teammate Brian Travis who placed 3rd at 141 lbs. The four qualifers helped the Spartans to a 5th place finish with 90 points.

Spartans Off to 4-0 Start

The University of Dubuque Softball team escaped the cold weather outside for four games inside the Rochester Dome over the weekend at the Luther Tournament. The Spartans went 4-0 with wins over St. Norbert, Gustavus-Adolphus, UW-Stevens Point, and Carleton. Sophomore Tori Woltz led the UD offense with nine hits including three doubles and a home run. Junior Hannah Koerperich earned three of the four wins in 13 2/3 innings of work.

Baseball Adds a Pair of Doubleheaders

The University of Dubuque Baseball team has added a pair of doubleheaders to its 2014 schedule. The Spartans will travel to St. Louis, Mo. on Friday, March 7th for two games against Westminster College beginning at Noon. UD has also added a twinbill versus Elmhurst College on Monday, March 10th in Jacksonville, Ill. at Lenz Field.

All-Iowa Conference Honors for Norris, Frazier, & Heffernan

A trio of University of Dubuque Men's Basketball student-athletes earned All-Iowa Conference (IIAC) honors as selected by the IIAC Coaches. UD sophomore Andre Norris made the jump from Second Team last season to First Team All-IIAC in 2014. Spartans senior Chris Frazier and junior Gage Heffernan were named Second Team All-IIAC honorees. Dubuque finished the year with a 21-5 overall record and second place in the IIAC at 10-4.

Kotas & Goetz Named All-Iowa Conference

University of Dubuque Women's Basetball student-athletes Jenna Kotas and Jessica Goetz each earned All-Iowa Conference (IIAC) honors as voted by the leagues coaches. Kotas was named to the First Team while Goetz earned Second Team recognition. The Spartans finished the season with an overall record of 17-9 and tied for second place in the IIAC at 10-4. The second place finish was the best in the programs history.
