Softball Picked 5th by IIAC Coaches

The University of Dubuque softball team has been picked 5th by the IIAC coaches in the 2014 ppre-season poll released today, March 28. The Spartans return from a year where they qualified and tied for 3rd place in the IIAC tournament.

Softball Sweeps Augsburg

The University of Dubuque softball team captured the sweep of Augsburg College on Saturday. The Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to capture game one by a 5-4 score when designated hitter Hannah Koerperich homered as the leadoff batter. Amanda Williams claimed the complete game victory on the mound after striking out six batters. In the second game, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead as UD captured the game 7-1 with Megan Loes earning the complete game win.

Spartans Lacrosse Falls to Mt. St. Joe

The University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse team played its home opener on Saturday afternoon at Oyen Field. The Spartans fell behind 11-0 before scoring the last four goals of the first half with Bridget Schirmers and Judy Borah each scoring two goals. Mount Saint Joseph (Ohio) earned the 19-7 victory over UD in the second Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC) game for the Spartans. Dubuque is 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the MWLC.

Spartans Sweep Central in Iowa Conference Opener

The University of Dubuque Baseball team started the 2014 Iowa Conference season in outstanding fashion with a pair of victories against Central College on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans won the opener 6-4 behind 10 team hits in the seven inning game. UD won the second game, a nine inning game, 8-7 thanks in part to a three run seventh inning. Will Fogel went 5-7 on the day with two doubles, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

Softball Splits, Prepare for IIAC Opener

The University of Dubuque softball team split on Sunday at the Central Invite, opening with a 4-3 victory over St. Scholastica and battling to a 1-2 loss against UW-Eau Claire in the nightcap. The Spartans (10-5 overall) are preparing for a busy week as they open Iowa Conference play on the road at Buena Vista University (8-10 overall) in Storm Lake on April 1.

Spartans Win Series vs. Central

The University of Dubuque Baseball team opened some eyes around the Iowa Conference this weekend by taking the series with Central - three games to one! The Spartans won the first game on Sunday 2-1 before an 11-inning 3-2 loss. UD swept Central on Saturday. UD freshman accounted for 26 of the teams 36 hits on the weekend.

Men's Golf Continue To Win

The University of Dubuque men's golf team continued where the squad left pff last fall, by once again claiming another golf title on Monday at the 15-team 2014 Webster University Men's Golf Invitational held on March 30-31 in St. Louis, Mo. The Sunset Country Club (Par 72, 6,627 yards) played tough and challenged the student-athletes on the final day. UD trailed the Central College Dutch by three strokes after the opening round and rallied back the final day to tie with Spalding with a team score of 606. The Spartans finished with the low round of 308 to claim their seventh first place finish of the 2013-14 season.

Pair of Spartans Sign to Play in Pecos League

A pair of former University of Dubuque baseball players have signed to play in the Pecos League for the 2014 season. Jordan Gawronski has signed with the Bisbee Blue while Michael Campbell will suit up for the Raton Osos. The former Spartans will report for spring training on May 5th before opening the season on May 14th. They are the second and third members of the 2013 Spartans Baseball team to sign deals to continue playing joining Spencer Kuehn is playing in Germany.

Spartans Host Duhawks

Due to poor playing condition on Loras' home field, the University of Dubuque Baseball team hosted Loras College on Tuesday afternoon at the UD Baseball Field. Dubuque lost the opener 9-4 before falling in game two 10-6. Freshman Austin McWhite finished the day with four hits, two runs, two doubles, a triple, and four runs batted in.

Spartans Softball Homer in IIAC Sweep

The University of Dubuque softball team opened Iowa Conference play on the road on Tuesday and displayed an impressive offensive output en route to a sweep of the host Buena Vista University Beavers 10-3 in game one and 10-7 in game two. Coach Wendi Wipperfurth has her squad hitting the ball deep, the Spartans finished the series with six homeruns. UD has 17 homeruns for the 2013-14 season and improved to 13-5 overall and 2-0 in IIAC.

Pictures, Literally, at an Exhibition

From April 12 – 14, students from the University of Dubuque’s computer graphics program will exhibit their visual interpretations of Mussorgsky’s orchestral Pictures at an Exhibition at Heritage Center’s Bisignano Art Gallery. The exhibit, titled Pictures, Literally, at an Exhibition, opens at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 in conjunction with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra’s Mussorgsky performance at 7:30 p.m. in Heritage Center’s John and Alice Butler Hall.

Spartans Sweep, Wipperfurth All-time Career Wins Leader

The University of Dubuque softball team captured another sweep on the road by collecting a pair of wins against the UW-Platteville Pioneers on Wednesday afternoon. UD trailed 0-1 entering the seventh inning in game one and battled back for a 2-1 victory. In game two, the Spartans jumped out to an early lead and cruised to an 8-2 win. The two wins earned head coach Wendi Wipperfurth the all-time UD career wins record with her 65th victory in just her fourth season. Previous mark was held by Ted Rebholz (1984-1992) with a career record of 64-212 overall.

UD Department of Fine and Performing Arts presents Spring into the Arts Performance Series

The University of Dubuque Department of Fine and Performing Arts will present a spring performance series entitled Spring into the Arts. The series will include performances from University ensembles such as the UD Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Gospel Choir, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Ensemble Theatre Company, UD Dance Company, and more. Over one hundred UD students are involved in the department and its ensembles and performances, performing everything from instrumental jazz, classical choral pieces, new musical theatre, and comic operas. Spartans Surpass 2013 Goal Total in Loss to Aurora

The University of Dubuque Women's Lacrosse team surpassed its 2013 goal total in five less games as they upped their total to 43 on the season. The Spartans 12-6 loss to Aurora University (2-6, 1-2 MWLC) on Saturday moved their Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference record to 0-4 and 0-7 overall.

The University of Dubuque Track and Field team set four school records in their first meet of the Outdoor Season at the Wartburg Select on Saturday. The UD men earned wins in a pair of field events with Rick Valcin winning the Pole Vault and Jeremy Lawson winning the Javelin. The UD women finished in eighth while the men took sixth.

The University of Dubuque Baseball team had two very different performances on Saturday afternoon at Coe. The Spartans were held to a season low three hits in a 3-0 loss in game one before a season high 13 hits in a 10-0 mercy rule victory in game two. Game two starting pitcher Josh Eastman flirted with perfection going five innings before allowing a baserunner in the sixth.

The University of Dubuque Baseball team continued its four game Iowa Conference series against Coe College on Sunday afternoon. The Spartans lost both games, 8-3 and 10-2. Daniel Casanova (Lake Tapps, Wash./Auburn Riverside) had five hits on the day and swiped his IIAC leading 17th stolen base of the season.

Eastman Named IIAC Baseball Performer of the Week

University of Dubuque junior Josh Eastman was named IIAC Baseball (Pitcher) Performer of the Week. Eastman threw a complete game, two-hit, shutout versus Coe on Saturday in the Spartans 10-0 win. He was working on a perfect game through five innings until a lead double in the bottom of the sixth. The Spartan ace needed only 65 pitches for the seven inning complete game.

IIAC Performer of the Week Honors for Sobotta

University of Dubuque senior Mitchell Sobotta (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) was named Men's Golf Performer of the Week. Sobotta finished tied for second place with a 145 (74-71) at the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Invite. He was one shot out of first place as the Spartans finished in third place as a team. The runner-up finish for Sobotta was his third top-five finish of the year and sixth top-ten finish in ten events. UD is ranked 20th in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division-III College Coaches Poll.

Iowa Conference Honors Valcin as Performer of the Week

University of Dubuque junior Rick Valcin (Catries, St. Lucia/Gros Islet) was named Men's Outdoor Track & Field (Field) Performer of the Week. Valcin won the pole vault at the Wartburg Outdoor Select Meet with a school record mark of 5.0m (16'-4.75"). After one week of competition he leads Division-III by 3.5 inches.

University of Dubuque Department of Fine and Performing Arts and Drama Club to present Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance

University of Dubuque music and theatre students will present The Pirates of Penzance, a comic opera written by Gilbert and Sullivan on Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. in John and Alice Butler Hall, Heritage Center. The production will be directed by University of Dubuque’s Director of Theatre Arts, Amy Ressler.
